WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues,

In the beginning of the 21st century, Musculoskeletal Diseases, although underestimated, are the most common causes of pain and disability throughout Europe and around the world.
They have an enormous impact on patients´ family lives and pose an increasing burden on Health Care systems. The Infections of Bones and Joints are probably the most devastating complications of whatever kind they may be, either post-traumatic and surgical, heamatogenous, or acute stemming from direct bacterial inoculation during daily activities.
Bone and/or Joint Infection mean additional suffering for the patients, increasing expenses burdening the Health Care System, and not uncommonly exhaustive efforts by the treating physicians'. A multidisciplinary approach aiming through research and innovative development at better understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of the infections will be at our patients benefit, the Health Care Systems´ relief, and may optimize prevention and treatment.
This is what EBJIS intends to fulfill by encouraging collaboration among Orthopaedic Surgeons, Microbiologists, Infectious Disease specialists, Molecular Biologists, Material Science Specialists, and others working within the field of Musculoskeletal Infections. EBJIS is the largest society in the field of Musculoskeletal Infection and our Annual Congress is the best scientific event in the field.
In 2007, EBJIS celebrates its the 25th anniversary since the year of 1982 when it was founded as a study group initative. In September 20-22 on Corfu island, experts from many European countries and the U.S. will share their knowledge and experience with all participants presenting their best achievements.
Several centuries ago Odysseus experienced an overwhelming hospitality and warmth in Corfu from the Feakes, the ancient inhabitants of this magnificent island, just before his arrival at his final destination in Ithaca. The world has changed since then, but Corfu island is more enchanting and beautiful than ever, and its people are as friendly as the ancient Feakes, always ready to embrace visitors with their warm hospitality. Nowadays Corfu is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the world accommodating many thousands of visitors each year. Endless blue, green beaches and some of the most modern and luxury hotels in the Mediterranean guarantee an unforgettable stay. Social events and excursions to the city, and the numerous natural beauty spots of the island will offer the participants of the Congress the opportunity to enjoy and discover a gorgeous island.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Corfu for an exciting congress.

Professor Konstantinos N. Malizos
EBJIS President 2005-2007
